“I’m so tired! My baby was up every two hours last night.” “My baby’s new thing is scream as loud as possible for as long as she has breath.” “Another blow out diaper! GRR.” Sound familiar? It’s so easy to have negative things to say about being a mom. You change diapers, center your day around naps, clean up messes… yahta yahta yahta, you get the idea. Sometimes I feel like people expect me to talk about the negative side of being a mom when they ask “How’s the mom life?” because to an outsider it looks like a lot of work. Other times I feel compelled to complain about mom life with other moms as a way to connect. Kind of like the colleagues who bond over a bad boss, poop stains can bring you together.
Recently I was caught up in casual complaining about my day-to-day then something changed. I spoke to Danielle Curtis, founder of Joonie — the best car seat cover on the market– about her experience starting a company. I asked her how she managed to balance her business, which she launched just months after having her third baby, and being a mom. Her response struck a chord with me and I don’t think I’ll forget it. Paraphrasing she said: “It’s tough! The thing is that I actually love being a mom. It’s hard when I don’t have as much time to play with my kids.” Her enthusiasm for motherhood was palpable and contagious.
Thank you, Danielle Curtis for unabashedly telling me that you love being a mom and playing with your kids. Your response helped me embrace feelings I had about motherhood. I got off the phone feeling like I had permission to tell people that I LOVED being a mom too. I don’t have to balance my response about “the mom life” with stories about why it’s hard. I don’t have to tell people that being home is nice but I miss work.
The truth is that I L O V E being Gemma’s mom and spending all day with her. Sure, there are hard times and I am still going to commiserate with other moms because my sanity depends on it. And yes, I have aspirations / passions / hobbies outside of motherhood, but I am also embracing this time with my baby girl and I want the whole world to know how wonderful it is.
